Drewry: World Container Index Down by 3.1%
The composite index decreased 3.1% this week but, 4.9% up when compared with same period of 2019.
The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is $1,610 per 40ft container, which is $229 higher than the five-year average of $1,381 per 40ft container.
Drewry’s composite World Container index decreased by 3.1% to $1,446.22 per 40ft container. Spot rates from Shanghai to Genoa crumbled 14%, a decline of $254 to reach $1,617 per 40ft box. Rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam dipped 1% or $18 to $1,472 per feu. Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles and Shanghai to New York sunk by $20 and $19 to touch $1,538 and $2,589 respectively. Alternatively, rates from New York to Rotterdam nudged up by 8% to stand at $511 per 40ft container. However, rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai, Los Angeles to Shanghai and Rotterdam to New York have remained stable. Drewry expects rates to increase in the coming week driven by GRIs from 1st May.
