Medical Department

Cruise lines hire qualified and experienced medical staff to deal with health problems of the passengers during the cruise. The medical department onboard a cruise ships usually consists of one to two doctors and between one to four registered nurses, depending on the requirements and the size of the cruise ship. Most cruise lines run their medical departments through concessionaire companies but some of them also hire medical staff and run the department by themselves. Positions in medical department include of a Chief Doctor, Crew Doctor, and Registered Nurse. 

Chief Doctor/Physician

The Chief Doctor oversees the entire operations of the medical department. The primary responsibility of the physician is taking care of the health issues of both passengers and crew. The position requires current license and extensive experience with primary care, trauma, internal, cardiac, and emergency medicine. Previous experience of 2-3 years in subordinate positions on board ships required. Along with this a diploma from an accredited medical school and good command in English Language are also must for this position.

Salary ranges between US $4800-6400 per month, depending on the cruise lines. Contracts are usually for six months.

Crew Doctor/Physician

Crew Doctor is mostly responsible for the treatment of crew members, but can provide his/her services to passengers, if required. The position requires current license and extensive experience with primary care, trauma, internal, cardiac, and emergency medicine.  Diploma from an accredited medical school and good command in English Language are also must for this position. Possibility of promotion to Chief Doctor is also a plus for applicants.

Salary ranges between US $4600-5800 per month, depending on the cruise lines.

Registered Nurse

Cruise lines hire registered nurses with experience in handling accident and emergency cases, and experience in cardiac care, trauma, and internal medicine. Most cruise lines employ at least two nurses and a Senior Nurse. Diploma from an accredited nursing school with a minimum of two years hospital experience is a must for this position.  Nurses are on call for 24 hours a day and then off duty for the next 24 hours. Good command in English Language is a must.

Salary ranges between US $2200-2900 per month, depending on the cruise lines.
