Hotel Operations Department

Barring navigation, engine and entertainment, all other departments onboard a ship fall under the hotel operation department. Pursers, housekeeping, concessionaires and food and beverage departments are covered under the hotel division. Jobs in the hotel division onboard the ships are similar to jobs in a five-star hotel or resort. The Hotel Manager (Chief Purser) supervises all staff and crew in these departments. Heads of the respective departments report directly to the hotel manager.  Job positions in the Hotel Operation Department include of Chief Purser/Hotel Manager, Deputy Purser / Assistant Hotel Manager, Purser, Assistant Purser, Junior Assistant Purser, Crew Purser, Shore Excursion Manager, Assistant Shore Excursion Manager, Cost Accountant, and Revenue Accountant.

Chief Purser/Hotel Manager

The Chief Purser oversees the daily operations of all departments onboard a cruise ship except the deck, engine and entertainment departments. He supervises all staff and crew in pursers, housekeeping, and food and beverages departments.  This crucial position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience as a hotel manager along with a qualification in hotel management, or previous cruise experience in a similar position. Good communication skills and command over English language is a must for this position.

Salary for this position ranges between US $4300-6000 per month, depending on the cruise line.

Deputy Purser/ Assistant Hotel Manager

He/she is responsible for managing various operations as directed by the Chief Purser. The position requires a degree in the hotel management along with a minimum 3 years of experience in a managerial position in a hotel, or similar prior cruise ship experience. Good communication skills and fluency in English language is a must. This position has a possibility for promotion to Chief Purser.

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 3800-4800 per month.

Purser

Purser will be responsible for daily operations of the purser’s office or front desk as directed by the Chief Purser. Previous hotel experience along with a degree in hotel management, or prior cruise ship experience is required for this position. Good communication skills and fluency in English language is essential. This position has a possibility for promotion to Deputy Purser.

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 2300-3200 per month.

Assistant Purser

Assistant Purser reports to the Deputy Purser. He/she is responsible for managing various operations within the purser office and front desk. Previous hotel experience along with a formal hotel management degree is required for this position. Good communication skill and command over English language is essential.

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 2000-2500 per month.

Junior Assistant Purser

Junior Assistant Purser reports to Assistant Purser. He/she is responsible for managing operation on the front desk/reception area dealing directly with the passengers. Previous hotel experience is essential for this position. Good command over English language is essential while knowledge of other language/s will be an added advantage. This position has a possibility for promotion to Assistant Purser,

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 1600-1800 per month.

Crew Purser

Crew purser is responsible for various duties relating to the crew administration such as cabin allocations, security dog tags, crew ID cards etc. Previous hotel experience and accounting background would be an advantage for the applicants. Fluency in English language is essential.

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 1900-2300 per month.

Shore Excursion Manager

Shore Excursion Manager is responsible for supervision and arrangement of the shore excursions in various ports of call. Prior experience in travel and tourism and/or minimum 1 year of experience as assistant shore excursion manager is preferred for this position. Fluency in English language is a must.

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 2300-3200 per month, depending on the cruise line.

Assistant Shore Excursion Manager

Assistant Shore Excursion Manager is responsible for the promotion, supervision and arrangement of the shore excursions in various ports of call as directed by the Shore Excursion Manager. Prior experience in travel and tourism and/or minimum 1 year of experience onboard starting from an entry-level Cruise Staff position is preferred for this position. Fluency in English language is a must. This position has a possibility for promotion to Shore Excursion Manager.

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 1800-2100 per month, depending on the cruise line.

Cost Accountant

Cost Accountant is responsible for inventory control and managerial reporting, including generating daily food and supply cost, and weekly receiving of all items in the food, bar and photo departments. Fluency in English language and a background in accounting are preferred for this position. 

Salary for this position ranges between US$ 1800-2400 per month, depending on the cruise line.

Revenue Accountant

Revenue Accountant is responsible for the operation of cashless cabin charge system and NCR or MICROS register system. His/her responsibilities include balancing daily revenue, early morning register closure, as well as creating statements for the passengers. Fluency in English language and knowledge in accounting is desired.
