Gas leak cargo ship set to enter Darwin Harbour

The Darwin Port Corporation says it hopes leaking gas containers on board a ship outside the city's harbour area should be removed tomorrow.

The Eline Enterprise has been anchored several kilometres off the coast for more than a week.

More than 3,500 tonnes of ethylene gas has leaked from the containers after being damaged in extreme weather conditions at sea last week.

Darwin Harbour Master Ian Niblock says the outcome of a safety meeting will decide when the containers are to be removed.

He says leaking gas on board the ship is now well below dangerous levels.

A safety radius of one nautical mile around the ship remains in force until the gas containers are unloaded.

Once they have been loaded on to barges, the ship will be allowed to moor inside Darwin Harbour.

"There is a pilot on board," Mr Niblock said.

"She will come in to one of the inner anchorages."
