When birds and boats collide

Plans for a giant container ship terminal in Liverpool may be scuppered by new environmental guidelines designed to protect Merseyside’s birdlife.

Liverpool Bay being made into the marine equivalent of a national park means permission to build the terminal, which could involve dredging deeper shipping channels and a surge in the number and size of vessels coming into Liverpool, may be refused.

It is, however, unlikely.

Natural England has warned new developments will only be allowed to go ahead if research shows they have “no adverse effect” on the wildlife.

Protecting birdlife is important, but so is remaining economically competitive.
