Mitsui & Co and Gazprom agree Sakhalin II and LNG-bunkering plans

Mitsui & Co and Gazprom have cemented their partnership, pledging to work together to develop small and mid-scale LNG projects, collaborating to produce, transport and market cargoes in Japan and promoting LNG bunkering in the Sea of Japan.

The two companies are partners in Sakhalin II, in which Mitsui holds a 12.5% stake. They signed a memorandum of understanding on LNG bunkering last year.

Gazprom chairman Alexey Miller and Mitsui & Co chairman Masami Iijima signed the agreement in Vladivostok on Thursday (7 September). Future co-operation will focus on expanding Sakhalin II and promoting LNG as marine fuel, Gazprom says.

Last year, Gazprom launched a small-scale LNG strategy to promote gas as transport fuel in Russia.

In January, Japan published the findings of its feasibility study into domestic LNG-supply infrastructure. It plans to launch ship-to-ship bunkering of LNG in 2020 and to develop the Port of Yokohama as an LNG-bunkering hub.
